There was once a time where if you had Hepatitis C, then you didn’t have any hope of getting this cured, and you were always at risk of developing liver problems, or even cancer. However, this has changed. Kinda! Although the FDA have approved some drugs which can cure this disease, it’ll cost $1,125 for just one pill! And do the insurers want to help? Not really.
To put this in perspective, millions of US citizens will have Hep C, and lots won’t even know it – chances are, you could know someone or have talked to someone who has it. Fortunately, nowadays, it’s a lot more manageable, and safer to take drugs which can cure you.
One of the newest drugs out there is called Harvoni, and that will cure you if you take one pill every day for eight weeks. However, just a few years ago it could’ve been that you’d be taking pills for up to a year with no noticeable improvement on your disease.
The side effects for these new drugs, like many other medications, could be harmful, but in the vast majority of cases, it may involve a few headaches leading to you needing to take aspirin perhaps…
However, to get this Harvoni drug, it’s going to cost you, or your insurer almost $100,000 for the full treatment. Other medication costs almost as much as that, and so in all honesty, unless your condition is much more serious, it doesn’t look like you’re going to be getting this new drug in the near future. However, insurers are looking at ways to utilise this treatment for a lower cost – of course they are. They’re insurers!
Despite the costs, this is a massive move forward in medicine and a great bit of hope for anyone suffering from this disease. It shows that the capability is there, and with more and more drugs going through testing, the prices are bound to go down, and become more affordable for either yourself, or your insurer to pay for.
