This may seem strange to you, but it’s 100% true! The soldiers in the Russian army never wore socks until this year. They wore special foot-warps called “potryanki” since the 17th century! They used it that long, because these strange wannabe socks were considered as the best thing to wear with army boots. But unfortunately potryanki lost their battle with the ordinary socks and they’ll be history by the end of this year. And because of their association with the Russian army they will be remembered as “Russian stockings” or as the French call them – chaussettes russes.
