There is a condition, called Hyperthymesia, which lets you remember every single detail of your whole life. Only 25 people in the entire world have it.
The Hyperthymestic syndrome, also known as HSAM (highly superior autobiographical memory), is an extremely rare condition, which enables a person to remember every single detail of his/ her life. The scientific name comes from the Greek words “hyper” and “thymesis”. It basically means being able to remember excessive details of one’s lifespan.
Those, who have Hyperthymesia, are different from other people, who have exceptional memory regarding details about past events, whether they’d be autobiographical or just simple bits of information, which fascinated them. The people, who have this condition, actually don’t use any memorizing techniques and strategies in order to remember something. They do it unconsciously and can’t control the flashbacks of information and memories unlike the rest of the people, who have good memory. In fact, when Hyperthymesiacs see a date, they can actually visualize and see every single detail that happened on that date, even if it didn’t affect their lives directly.
This condition is so rare and there are only 25 people in the whole world, who have been diagnosed with it. The very first recorded case of Hyperthymesia took place in 2006 and it affected a person, who was simply dubbed just as “A.J.”. Ever since A.J. became 14 years old she was able to recall every small detail that has happened through the years. Her case was diagnosed by a team of professionals at the University of California. Up until November 2013 a total of 25 people were diagnosed with this condition.
It’s unclear what exactly causes Hyperthymesia, but unlike similar conditions, which are linked to excessive memory (like autism, for example), those, who have the Hyperthymesia syndrome don’t appear to be suffering from any negative neurodevelopmental disorders.
