In 1988, Martin Pistorious was only 12 years old, but he developed a serious illness which began with a sore throat, but ended with him in a coma. Although he was treated for many different illnesses, including meningitis, and tuberculosis, the doctors just couldn’t work out what was wrong with him. Nothing they tried worked.
At the start, he just couldn’t speak. Then he didn’t eat. Then, after 18 months of illness, he had to use a wheelchair. Whilst he couldn’t speak or eat, it didn’t mean he couldn’t hear, but that’s what everyone around him assumed.
At the time, the doctors just put it down to some disease that hadn’t been found yet, and they believed that he wouldn’t be able to live much longer, but how wrong they were. Throughout these years, he went around many care centres for people like him, and his family were left distraught. So much so, that at one point, his mother said that he must die. Despite the harsh sounding words, Martin realised what she really meant by them, and understood why she had said them.
Martin described it as being a ghost. He tried to shout and be heard, but everyone just continued to look by, barely noticing him. Nothing of his was actually his, it was just attached to him.
During those years, he witnessed his mother trying to kill herself due to the unhappiness she went through. However, after a long time, he started to be able to do things again. Only small things, but he had some control over himself at last. He would respond to when certain things were done, which showed his carers and family, that he was fully aware of things.
Over the years, he learnt to do things again. He can use the computer to talk to people, and he even met his girlfriend, whom he is now married to. More recently, from his wheelchair, and a voice synthesiser, he is now running his own business, whilst married to Joanna, who was his girlfriend.
