You might find this shocking, but not everybody loves Johnny Depp. In fact, the original Willy Wonka – Gene Wilder, didn’t even want to see the remake of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory from 2005, because Depp starred in it!
The remake of the original Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was released back in the not so distant 2005 and it received mainly positive reviews from worldwide critics. Furthermore, it was a big box office success scoring a total of $475 million on a budget of $150 million. Before Tim Burton took over as the project’s director actors like Brad Pitt, Nicholas Cage, Bill Murray and Jim Carrey were considered for the main role. However, Burton picked Johnny Depp for the portrayal of the eccentric Willy Wonka. He also used other acclaimed actors such as Helena Bonham Carter and Christopher Lee. And even though the movie was considered as a big success, not everybody liked it.
Gene Wilder, the actor, who portrayed the original Willy Wonka in Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory back in 1971, didn’t want to see the remake, because Johnny Depp starred in it. Two years after the movie was released Wilder stated that he hadn’t seen it not because he didn’t like Depp in general, but because he thought he would be completely disappointed by him and his acting skills in the movie. Back in 2013 Wilder addressed the issue once again, only this time he stated that the remake was “an insult”. He didn’t address Depp’s acting in the remake, but he stated that he wasn’t impressed by Tim Burton’s work and he heavily criticized the director’s choices and final results.
