Google has already taken it to the next level : today, you can unlock your phone with your face. Thanks to a new technology called Face Unlock, Android owners can use their head as a PIN. The facial recognition feature, which was first released in 2011, has been currently updated and a ‘liveness’ check has been included. This way you need to blink in order for your phone to get unlocked and not just show a static image of yourself as that used to work with the earlier version of the feature.
Face Unlock is being criticized as less secure than Apple’s fingerprint scanner as someone with similar looks would be able to hack your phone. However, Google is working on fixing that potential problem. In future versions of Android users would be able to unlock their phone by pulling funny faces such as wriggling their nose, poking out their tongue or frowning. The device would then scan and compare the facial expression to a previously captured picture to confirm the identity of the user.
