There’s been a lot of controversy over the last few years when Google implemented ‘street view’ on Google Maps. You might have seen one of the Google cars roaming the streets with its camera, or even a bike. You may have also looked up your house on Google Maps to see what it looks like from the road, which is where the main issue of privacy arises.
A lot of people don’t want their house to be viewable from Google Maps, but the law allows it, as the cars are on public roads when the pictures are being taken. The main issue people have is that you can clearly see license plates, people’s faces, and also see a lot about a people’s private life when looking at their house through Google Maps.
One example of this is when someone unfortunately left his garage door open on the day the Google car was coming down his street, and so his personal belongings were clearly visible.
Although it’s all technically legal, Google do give you an option to get your house, faces, and license plates blurred out. If you find your home on Google Maps by searching your address, go into street view, and then click the ‘Report a problem’ button in the right bottom corner of the screen. Make sure your house is in the box it shows, fill in the form, and submit it. If you check back a few days later, you would hopefully see that your house has been blurred out.
Do the same process if you want faces or license plates blurred out, and in fact, Google actually urges you to report any license plates and faces so that they can blur them to maintain people’s privacy.
You might be shocked at how much information Google actually gather, and unless you’re living far out in the country, it’s likely they’ve got your address and pictures of your house stored on their servers.
