Profanity seems to be a common feature of rap songs. However, Will Smith is different. In an interview for the Radio Times, the famous rapper and actor reveals more about his song-writing and talks about his meeting with Nelson Mandela.
When Smith started his musical career, his grandmother heard some of his lyrics which contained questionable language. The old lady wrote to her grandson, telling him that intelligent people know how to express themselves without swearing. Her words obviously had a significant influence on Will Smith and today he is known as one of the few rappers whose songs are free of profanity.
Smith’s perception of Hollywood was also greatly influenced by one man – Nelson Mandela. The rapper met Mandela in Johannesburg and the former South African president told Smith that he loved cinema, as movies brought hope and had huge power over human emotions.
