Tupac Amaru Shakur (1971 – 1996) was born in East Harlem, NY. He was an American rapper and actor, widely famous with his stage name 2Pac and also one of the best selling artists of all times with 75 million albums sold all over the world by 2010.
Growing up among people convicted of severe transgressions and who were incarcerated, Tupac spent time in jail himself. In 1993 Shakur was convicted of being an accessary in an assaulting incident which occurred at a Manhattan hotel and imprisoned in 1995. While he was serving time his multi-platinum album ‘Me Against The Music’ was released. In an interview 2Pac gave after he was out of prison, he stated that he was misinterpreted by the public as a gangsta rapper, claiming that “he is not a thief or someone who hurts people but just a brother who fights back”.
In 1996 2Pac was shot and later died in hospital of internal bleeding. The alleged shooter Orlando Anderson, a member of a rival gang, was never charged with killing 2Pac and was later killed in an unrelated gang shooting.
