The newly built Birmingham library, which costs £190 million (more than $300 million) and has been dubbed the largest public library in Europe, has turned into a scandal.
According to official reports, the library hasn’t been equipped with the proper ladders and moving platforms, so tens of thousands of books can’t be reached at the moment. Up until recently the staff has been climbing on ladders in order to reach thousands of books placed on extremely high shelves, but the officials have banned the staff from doing so over some speculations of possible accidents. The gallery opened half a year ago, but the needed equipment was never installed. Thus, all those books remain out of the public’s reach. The high shelves have made the situation extremely frustrating both for the library’s officials and for the public masses.
While the library is without any doubt picturesque, it seems it can’t really serve its purpose.
