Meet the man who managed to stop World War III back in 1983.
Stanislav Yevgrafovich Petrov, a former Soviet Union military officer, prevented a war between the US and the Soviet Union which could have wiped out the entire Earth. In 1983 the command center of the USSR Air Defense Forces became the epicenter of the events that would determine the course of our lives forever. The nuclear warning system at the command center went off and the then 44 year old Stanislav Petrov was obliged to report it to his supervisors. According to the alarm, the US had launched a nuclear missile headed for the USSR. Fortunately, Petrov examined the alarm and the situation with enviable composure and determined that it was a false alarm. Instead of alarming his supervisors and kicking off a nuclear war between the two countries, he saved the whole planet.
Earlier this year a biographical movie about Petrov entitled The Man Who Saved The World and featuring him, Kevin Costner, Matt Damon, Robert De Niro and others premiered at film festivals in the US and Denmark.
