Sam Berns was a truly remarkable 17-year-old teenager. When he was just 2 years old he was diagnosed with an extremely rare genetic disorder called progeria. The disease makes the process of aging happen at a very fast pace. It also goes with a variety of other symptoms such as cardiovascular problems, degeneration of the muscles and bones of the body and other side effects associated with the process of aging.
Despite surrendering to all of these dreadful problems and feeling sorry about himself, Sam had a different approach towards living a happy life. Sam and his family dedicated their lives to spreading awareness about progeria and eventually finding a cure for the disease. Their work and efforts were featured in the documentary “Life According To Sam” which was broadcast on HBO.
Before his recent passing at the age of 17, Sam was able to deliver a truly inspiring TED talk.
In his speech Sam shared with the audience his 3 strategies for living a happy and fulfilling life. First off, he never wasted energy feeling bad about himself. Sam always had a positive outlook on life and focused only on the activities that could bring him joy. Sam surrounded himself only with good kind-hearted people and always looked forward to something positive.
Sam’s family and friends hope the boy’s wise words will help people appreciate life more.
