There’s a place in Netherlands that’s known as the Dementia Village. The village’s original name is Hogeway and it’s entirely fake – from the shops to the hair salon.
Dementia Village started as an experimental project nearly 2 decades ago. With its fake grocery stores, restaurants, shops and even post office it looks like any other small village, except that the people living there are suffering from dementia. The salespeople, the post office worker and even the hair stylist are actually medics and nurses, who have been sent there to take care of the ill elders. Nowadays Hogeway is home to around 150 elderly people. According to the doctors, the patients are better off in Dementia Village instead of the real world. The villagers seem to take in the fake environment better than the one in other residential homes and they don’t need to as much medication as they would in the real world.
The one way out of Dementia Village is guarded 24/7 with surveillance cameras and locks.
