A 31 year old British artist was born with the rare condition called Achromatopsia – he could only see in black and white. However, present technology has turned him into the very first eyeborg – not only does he see colors, but he can also hear them.
The 31 year old Neil Harbisson has underwent a long series of operations in order to be able to do something, which no other person has been able to do – hear various colors instead of only seeing them. For the past decade Neil has been using a special electronic eye. However, after the complex surgeries that lasted from December 2013 to March 2014 Neil is now able to hear every color. His external eye transforms each color into a specific vibration thanks to an implant in the man’s skull. The implanted chip is similar to the widely known cochlear chips, which the deaf sometimes use.
Furthermore, the chip uses a wireless connection, which sends signals to Neil’s brain whenever he’s looking at an image on his cellphone. Thanks to modern technology, the artist can hear colors without even looking at them.
