The Whaley House is a famous haunted building in the city of San Diego, California. It was originally built in 1857 by Thomas Whaley and his big family on the land where once were the town gallows. Many of the convicts that were hanged there were buried in the nearby El Campo Santo cemetery including James “Yankee Jim” Robinson.
According to the legends Yankee Jim was hanged on the property for allegedly stealing a boat. Since he was an incredibly honest man he kept screaming he was innocent while he was being hanged on a relatively short gallows. Now it’s rumored that his ghost haunts the house and appears from time to time to proclaim his innocence. Many visitors of the spooky residence reported hearing awkward footsteps which they believe might be Yankee Jim’s.
Visitors also report seeing the ghost of Thomas Whaley’s wife who keeps looking after the household.
The Whaley House is currently maintained by the Save Our Heritage Organisation (SOHO) and it offers thrill seekers late night ghost tours on the last weekend of every month.
