The relationship between the two technology giants Apple and Samsung is nothing less than complicated. Both companies are major competitors on the frontier of consumer electronics and mobile devices. They are not only competitors on the market but in court as well. There are numerous cases of longstanding intellectual property litigations against Samsung all over the world, mainly for ripping off Apple’s iOS user interface as well as Apple’s innovative designs.
While both companies remain fierce competitors and try to sell mobile devices like hot cakes, they are also working together. It was confirmed that Samsung is the sole manufacturer of Apple’s latest iPad flagship feature – the Retina Display. The blockbuster third generation tablet that hit the market in March last year has a special liquid crystals display that provides a very high pixel density which the human eye can’t notice at a regular viewing distance.
This phenomenon in modern day business is possible due to the fact that Samsung is actually a huge international conglomerate of more than 30 separate businesses. Such a company is Samsung Mobile Display which was created in 2009 and specializes in R&D of technological solutions for televisions, smartphones and tablets. So while this company cuts a nice deal with Apple for producing and putting the new Retina Display in Apple’s iPad 3, another of Samsung subsidiary companies is being sued. All of this happens while both companies compete to sell as many mobile devices as possible. Simply put, it’s quite complicated.
