It’s debatable whether Thomas Rica’s sentence or crime is more shocking.
Rica used to work as a public works inspector in Ridgewood, New Jersey, up until recently. Over the course of the several past years the guy often visited the collection room for the parking meter’s taxes in the city in order to steal coins from it. Over these years he managed to collect $460,000 in quarters from the parking meters. Once the officials realized his crime he had to hire an expensive attorney in order to get himself out of an unflattering sentence. Rica’s lawyer managed to get him to choose between two options – spend several years and jail without paying a single quarter back or spend the next 5 years in probation and pay nearly half of the money back – $250,000.
It’s not surprising that Rica chose the latter option. However, it’s still strange that he managed to get away with it by keeping $210,000.
