If you’re a fan of Tim Burton’s work, you probably won’t find anything wrong with the words “corpse bride”. However, many Chinese gravediggers dig up tons of corpses each year in order to sell them as brides to the families of deceased men.
The so called corpse bride ritual is performed by the superstitious families of men who’ve died without ever being married. The families believe that burying the body of a woman with their lost relative will provide him happiness in the afterlife, so they buy female corpses and perform a matrimonial ceremony before burying them next to their deceased relative. Digging up graves is a serious crime in China and lawbreakers may face up to 3 years behind bars.
The police have recently caught 11 men in relation to corpse snatching. According to the reports, they have sold an undisclosed number of corpse brides for thousands of dollars.
