Scientists make all kinds of strange findings and conclusions. For example, in 2009 they discovered that swearing can boost your ability to withstand pain. This means you can increase your pain tolerance when you swear.
The MythBusters decided to check whether this theory was true or not. For this purpose they used the cold pressor test where the participants put their arms in ice cold water and keep them there until they feel intolerable pain.
First, the participants in the test had to recite non-offensive words while their hands were in the cold water. Then, they were allowed to curse and swear.
The results showed that swearing had increased the stamina by 30% and the participants in the test endured the pain longer when they were cursing. Thus, this myth was confirmed. A special list of words may now be created to boost the tolerance even further.
