Stephen King is one of the most famous American authors still living today. The author is often called the “King of Horror” as most of his books are in that genre. King has sold more than 350 million copies and his books have been translated to more than 40 languages. He has also been awarded many awards for his work and contribution to the literature world.
In 1999 while walking on the shoulder on a highway in Maine, King had an accident. The author was struck by a van and badly injured. King suffered multiple fractures on his right leg, a broken hip and a collapsed lung. The doctors even considered amputating King’s leg but eventually managed to save it by using an external fixator. He had to spent a month in hospital and undergo several operations and physiotherapy.
King insisted on purchasing the van as he didn’t want it to appear on eBay. Reportedly, the vehicle was later destroyed at a junk yard. King shared in an interview that he would have preferred that the van had been smashed at a charity event where everyone would donate in order to be able to shatter it with a sledgehammer.
