Many people, even fearless ones, have arachnophobia or fear of spiders. Eric Reis from Brazil managed to capture an amazing sight in Santo Antonio da Platina situated about 240 miles away from Sao Paulo. The 20-year-old Reis was shooting a wedding when he noticed the spiders. The creatures were moving up and down webs and it appeared as if they were falling from the sky. Upon examining the video it was revealed that the spiders were an extremely rare type of arachnids called Anelosimus eximius. They tend to hide in trees during daytime and usually construct huge sheets of webs in the early evening in order to catch flies and other insects.
Professor Marta Fischer, a specialist in spiders at the University of Parana, explained that the phenomenon is typical for the Brazilian region in question. She also described the specific type of spider as very social which means it is typical for the species to swarm like bees or ants. Spider webs could stretch from the ground up to more than 60 feet high. If blown by strong winds the webs could detach from the ground along with the spiders and the winds might carry them to new places where they would appear to be “raining down from the sky”.
