Back in the 1990s Samuel L. Jackson already had a number of movie titles behind his back. However, his worldwide recognition came with the iconic Pulp Fiction from 1994 that got nominated for a total of 7 Academy Awards.
Quentin Tarantino, the director and the screen writer, had written the character Jules Winnfield while thinking how Jackson would be the best option for playing the role of Winnfield. However, it took 2 auditions for Jackson before he finally landed the part after almost losing it to Paul Calderón. And this wasn’t the only obstacle he had to face before the filming was wrapped up. Jackson’s character was intended to have an Afro hairdo, but Jackson had already begun losing his hair, so he had to wear a wig. So, a personal assistant was sent to a wig store in order to get an Afro-style wig for Jackson. Unfortunately, the assistant mistook the Afro for a wig with Jheri curls.
Before the assistant was able to return the wig Jackson managed to convince Tarantino to keep it, so he ended up wearing the Jheri Curls in the movie.
