Nicholas Long, 25, a former hokey star, got buried in debts and started scamming the supermarkets. He did it more than 20 times but got caught when scanning all his groceries as loose onions which the shop didn’t even sell at the time. They just had it as standardized option on the scanners. Long managed to steal more than $700 worth of goods.
While being at the self-service checkpoint at the grocery store, Long was passing every single items as loose onion. This caught the guard’s attention and the “winning” scheme was put to an end.
At the trial it was revealed that Long had fears of losing his job, his girlfriend got pregnant and he accumulated too many debts including a loan he took on behalf of his father. His father’s business collapsed and the son had to pay everything by himself.
The judge said that even though he is a respectable young man with international fame, he got into trouble. Whatever his problems were, he shouldn’t have stolen and if he got caught again he would be put in jail, as he was already categorized as a persistent thief : he got caught in 2012 stealing a mobile phone and he also had previous offences for supermarket scams.
Long got sentenced to 180 hours of community service and a $700 fine.
