Netflix, now one of the world’s leading providers of media streaming has admitted to cleverly using BitTorrent, among other pirate sites, to monitor illegal downloads. The site then uses their findings to determine which programmes they ought to invest in and which they should leave out.
American show ‘Prison Break’ is “exceptionally popular” among piracy sites, says Kelly Merryman, the company’s Vice President of Content Acquisition.
The trouble with the European Market is that it doesn’t exist. With 28 nations, tastes can differ greatly and with TV rights based upon national borders, buying the French rights to a TV Show doesn’t mean you automatically have the Spanish and Belgian rights too, despite language similarities.
With different areas, come different quirks and tastes. Netflix has seemed to hit the jackpot with their clever technique. By monitoring these tastes, Netflix is able to offer a legal, and most probably faster, way of watching your favourite TV shows without the risk of committing any illegal crimes. Excellent!
