John Cleese’s ex-wife Alyce is now richer than him thanks to all the money he blew on their divorce.
Divorces can be nasty, especially if you blow away tons of money on them. And that’s exactly what happened to John Cleese during his third divorce.
Cleese is famous for many things. He has worked as a screenwriter, comedian, actor, producer, as well as a 75 year old Brit, who used to be worth tens of millions of dollars. Nowadays his own ex-wife is richer than him thanks to their divorce. All of Cleese’s marriages have lasted for around a decade. He married his first wife, Connie Booth, in 1968 and divorced her in 1978. His second wife, Barbara Trentham, stayed married to him between 1981 and 1990. His third wife, Alyce Eichelberg, was actually married to him for around 16 years and she got the most of it after they divorced.
Alyce, who is a psychotherapist, became even richer than Cleese after they ended their relationship because of the hefty settlement she got out of the divorce. The two of them separated in 2008, but the details about their settlement were made public in 2009. And they shocked the whole world!
Cleese had to sign a $19.7 million settlement with Alyce. She got a large number of sweet benefits from the divorce, some of which were $13 million in cash, a London-based home for $3.3 million, as well as an apartment in New York. The $19.7 million divorce settlement decreased John Cleese’s net worth to $16.5 million, making him poorer than his own ex-wife.
When he spoke about the case, he laughed about the fact that she didn’t even make any financial contributions to their relationships and she still got to rip him off in the end. Cleese also stated that he thought he got off lightly, because he was scared to think about what he could have lost, if his ex-wife had actually helped him increase his wealth in the first place.
