We all know alcohol is bad for our health. However, this statement is being challenged by a recent study from the University of Illinois.
In the study the researchers examined data from 190,612 patients, who were tested for blood alcohol content when they were admitted to hospital and medical units. The blood tests showed a range between zero and 0,5% alcohol content. Over 6,000 of those patients died in hospital. The study examined further the connection between the alcohol in the organism and the percentage of in-hospital death cases. The results were clear on one thing – the alcohol reduces the chances of death after an injury.
Somehow some protective effect is being triggered by alcohol intoxication after an injury. According to the researches, this effect applies to most types of injuries excluding burns. The strange phenomenon is being examined even further but there is still no exact evidence of the reason why alcohol is being so effective. However, if doctors manage to find the key to the protective mechanism of alcohol treatment will become much easier.
