Winter is harsh in many countries. And apparently this year’s winter isn’t milder for Wisconsin, since they’ve been forced to take unusual measures when it comes to the safety of those citizens, who are on the road.
In December the Wisconsin authorities launched a new program, which is set to help with the problem of de-icing the roads. Since the state apparently has more than enough cheese, the dairy product is being used as a de-icing weapon against the freezing winter. According to Jeffrey Tews, the manager of the program, the best sorts of cheese for de-icing a road are the mozzarella and the provolone, since they have the biggest concentrate of salt. Furthermore, a dairy company has found a way to reduce costs from food waste and to help with de-icing by donating dairy products to the government.
Before Wisconsin came up with the idea of using cheese for de-icing, they also tried traditional salt, sugar beet juice and discarded brewery grains. Apparently none of them worked, but it looks like cheese might actually be able to do the trick.
