For the past 22 years the Finnish couples have been participating in a rather extraordinary contest with an even more extraordinary winning prize.
The competition is called Eukonkanto, Akankanto or just wife-carrying in simple English. It involves carrying your own wife through a number of obstacles. Some of the obstacles in the 253.5 meters long track are a shallow pool, fences and rock/ sand tracks. The wife doesn’t have to be related to the racer, she can be any woman over the age of 17. The carrier can bring a belt or something similar in order to strap the woman he’s carrying Estonian-styled, piggyback or fireman’s carry-styled. The carried woman is secured with a helmet and she has to weight minimum 49 kg or she’ll have to wear additional weights.
The winning couple receives beer. However, the tricky part is that the beer’s quantity is exactly the same as the woman’s weight. There are special consolation prizes for the strongest carrier, the best costumes and the most entertaining couple in the race.
