Sounds ridiculous, doesn’t it? Nevertheless, this deal will remain in history as one of the most famous ones. Why so? Well, the story behind it is easy to grasp. In 1990 Pepsi needed to expand their market and so did Russian’s Stolichnaya Vodka.
The two companies made a deal worth $3 billion, which resulted in both parties’ favor. A plot well-known in sales. And by the looks of it, a very successful one indeed. Pepsi expanded their bottling market in the Solviet Union, whereas Stolichnaya Vodka became popular in the states. More so, Pepsi received 17 submarines, 10 commercial ships, a cruiser, a frigate and a destroyer from Soviet Union.
And no, Pepsi wasn’t preparing for a battle with Coca-Cola! The ship fleet was sold for scrap, so that it could later serve as payment for shipping Pepsi products to the Soviet Union.
