… This fact is officially posted in the website of Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease. It was already known from previous observations of humans that you will be less threatened of being affected with Alzheimer’s disease if you drink coffee or other drink with caffeine component at your middle and old age. Scientists thought that the lower risk was caused by caffeine – it keeps down the level of produced abnormal protein beta-amyloid, the once thought cause of the illness.
Recent findings, based on trials with mice, aren’t controversial to the previous conclusions, but show something important. First of all, coffee protects us from developing the disease, but other drinks with caffeine component, as well as decaffeinated coffee, don’t. Second, the caffeine helps in increasing blood levels of a specific growth factor (GCSF – granulocyte colony stimulating factor), which is extremely low in people who suffer from Alzheimer’s. It seems that mice with Alzheimer’s have improved their memory after taking certain amounts of caffeine.
