Being one of the top retailers and warehouse clubs in the whole world means that you’ll probably land in the headlines for the wrong reasons from time to time. The Costco Wholesale Corporation recently became the talk of several news agencies.
On the 19th of March this year the retailer giant stated that it will be dumping nearly 1 million jars of perfectly fine peanut butter. According to the company’s official statement, the peanut butter was in perfect condition and held no safety or health threats. So, why dump it? Apparently, the jars of peanut butter were produced from $2.8 million worth of Costco-owned peanuts and come from a bankrupt plant which was linked to a recall of the product in 2012. Costco refused to accept the jars or to donate them, so they opted for the only other option – to trash it. Thus, the jars were trashed in a landfill in New Mexico.
