The infamous movie “American Psycho” released back in April, 2000 is an incredible crime drama with a certain nuance of black comedy. The movie introduces the sinister character of Patrick Bateman portrayed extremely realistically by America’s top talented movie actor Christian Bale.
In the movie Bale plays a rich investment broker who lives a double life in the center of Manhattan, NYC in the late 80s. During the day Bateman is an overly narcissistic and extremely smart corporate businessman but during night time he turns into a devilish serial killer with no conscious whatsoever.
Christian Bale shared in interviews that playing the character of Bret Easton Ellis’s novel was a very physically and mentally demanding endeavor. Bale spent countless hours working out and physically preparing for the role of the sadistic Bateman. While preparing he also spoke over the phone with the director of the movie Marry Harron about the Martian-like nature of the character and how he was studying the people and the world around him by trying to contemplate the proper way to behave. What’s quite shocking is that during those conversations Bale shared he had seen Tom Cruise talk on the David Letterman talk show and was really taken by his intense energy.
Bale literally took the mannerisms and intense friendliness with eerie nothingness behind the eyes from real life Tom Cruise and used it for his part. Bale also drew inspiration from the performance of Nicolas Cage in “Vampire’s Kiss” due to the striking similarities of the characters.
