In China there is fierce competition practically for any job opening nowadays. The requirements for the job candidates are usually high but if you wish to become a flight attendant you need to be prepared for some really serious mistreatment. Even if you prepare the best CV that lists your skills, previous work related experience and references, the chances you pass the first pre-screening are very slim.
Recently, the Global Times published an article that described the selection process for flight attendants in one of the largest Chinese air carriers “China Southern Airlines”. The company created something that could be described as a beauty pageant. They even turned the whole selection process into a mini reality TV show.
Unfortunately, nearly 98% of the women couldn’t pass even the first interview. It was all because of the outstanding job requirements the women needed to comply with completely. Some of them were that they have to be younger than 25 years, single and 5 to 5.9 ft tall. Not to mention the fact that their legs couldn’t be “X” or “O” shaped and they couldn’t have any visible scars, tattoos or glasses.
Because of these requirements most of the Chinese companies have been accused in objectifying women for the way they look. The air travel companies have responded that it’s all about keeping the positive image and having top customer service.
