Selfies became so popular in 2013 that the word was officially added to the Oxford dictionary. Of course, celebrity selfies were the most popular kind all the way through the year and some stars such as Miley Cyrus or Justin Bieber appeared to be literally addicted to them as they were tweeting images of themselves on a very regular basis.
However, selfies took a new turn as a new trend was established. Instead of posting glamorous photos, celebrities started tweeting rather unflattering images of themselves or the so called “ill healthies”. Canadian pop singer Justin Bieber posted a selfie from his sickbed after collapsing on stage earlier and “thanked his fans for the love”. A sick Miley Cyrus tweeted about feeling terrible and hurting accompanied with a photo of herself looking rather ill. English singer Jessie J shared with her fans a photo of her bleeding thumb after experiencing a paper cut.
Celebrities might resort to “ill healthies” to attract sympathy and attention or they simply might be out of ways to keep their fans interested and entertained.
