Can you imagine a penthouse being placed on the first floor?
Before elevators came into fashion there were no penthouses with panoramic views or maisonettes on rooftops. The wealthy families didn’t occupy the top floors not because they didn’t enjoy a nice view, but because there were no elevators in the standard 7 story or less buildings several centuries ago. The top floors were usually occupied by the poorest families, who had to climb sets and sets of stairs each day. The system was simple – the poorer the inhabitants, the higher the floor. It didn’t change even after the lifts were invented, since they used to cause the so called elevator sickness to most people. Our precedents used to get sick at the sudden stop of the elevator and the feeling they got when the cabin was moving.
Even nowadays elevators have a huge social impact on all of us – some are scared of getting stuck or of a possible crash, others get claustrophobic and the rest have just watched too much horror movies.
