It might sound unbelievable, but there’s a particular family of gemstones which are so beautiful and rare that some types are more expensive than diamonds. They are called garnets.
Some garnets are actually affordable and aren’t that rare. The Arizona pyrope, however, is one of the priciest garnets out there. It can be found only in some parts of Arizona and has the brightest and finest red color of all garnets. The only way to get your hands on these precious gems is to either live in the area of the Navaho Nation or be willing to pay undisclosed amounts of money for a single pyrope, which is less than a carat. The reason they are so expensive and rare is because they are tiny and are found in some ant hills after rain storms. The ants in Arizona dig them up while digging their holes and discard them from the ground, similar to the way miners work their way through a gold mine.
Some locals trade these precious gems at the market.
