An average person has 28 to 32 teeth in his/her mouth (depending on if wisdom teeth are still there). This 17 year old boy, however, became a world-wide sensation several days ago because he had 232 extra teeth in his mouth.
Ashik Gaval, a teenager from India, was suffering from severe toothaches for about 18 months. The doctors in his village weren’t able to come up with any diagnoses for his super swollen gums, so his family took Ashik to Mumbai. The doctors there thought he had a cancer, but as it turned out, it was a super rare condition called composite odontoma. It basically causes one gum to grow many teeth. As the doctors tried to use a hammer and a chisel to take out the formation from the boy’s mouth, it turned out there were hundreds and hundreds of teeth in various forms and sizes hidden within his mouth cavity.
It took 7 whole hours for the doctors to extract a total of 232 extra teeth – a world record!
