An extremely rare dialect landed an Indian woman at a mental hospital for 12 years!
This is the story of a woman named Rita Quintero, who had to spend 12 years locked inside a mental hospital as if she was a prisoner. Her story inspired a theatrical play, as well as a lawsuit for $10 million.
Rita was seen rummaging through some trash bins in Kansas, US, probably looking for some food. She tried to explain, but her basic Spanish wasn’t understandable. All the locals managed to get from her was that she was a woman coming “from the heavens” or just “the skies”. They thought she was crazy, so they placed her in the Larned State Hospital, a mental hospital. Ever since Rita landed at the institution everyone thought she was crazy. She would chant and speak in some unknown language and she would often dance around the place. She was falsely diagnosed with schizophrenia, although there really wasn’t anything wrong with her. Everyone was puzzled by the words, which were coming out of her mouth. Nobody could understand her language, so they thought that she was just talking in gibberish.
Little did they know the truth was far from what they thought was just “mentally ill”. As it turned out, Rita was just speaking an extremely rare dialect, which doesn’t even have an alphabet. Her speech was consisted of ancient Aztec language and she wasn’t even able to explain who she was and what was going on. The mental hospital’s staff believed she was insane and made her spend 12 years of her life in the institution, because all they could understand was that she came “from the sky”. In reality, Rita meant to say she came from the high mountains of the Copper Canyon.
The Mexican Indian was hospitalized for 12 years and was released from the hospital back in the late 1990s.
