It might sound crazy, but some people in the USA still collect rain water. And even though it might sound even crazier, they can be arrested and jailed for doing so.
Gary Harrington from Eagle Point, Oregon, has been having problems with law enforcement in his state for over a decade. Since 2002 the man has been brought down beore the courts in Oregon for collecting rain water. Harrington has three reservoirs on his vast 170 acre property. For several decades he has used the reservoirs to collect rain and snow runoff. However, an old Oregon law from 1925 states that the water in Oregon is publicly owned, which means that a permit has to be obtained for storing water. Unfortunately for Harrington, although the Oregon Water Resources Department approved the his permits for the reservoirs, the state’s court rescinded them shortly after.
Harrington has spent some time behind bars over the past decade and has received a number of fines, including one for $1,500, for his “crime”.
