It is everyone’s dream to have plenty of money. Perhaps to buy that nice house you’ve always dreamed of. Or just to be able to spend more at your weekly shop… Most of us will do this the conventional way of finding a job, turning up every morning 9-5 and over a year or two save enough for a nice new car, or for a down payment on a house.
A group of thieves thought they’d get their money a different way. However, I don’t know whether I’d quite go to this much effort to get 50K!
On the 18th March, this group of thieves decided to tunnel under a Tesco Express store in Rochdale, Manchester to the cash machine. Greater Manchester Police have said that they managed to take £50,000, whilst causing £2000 worth of damage to the convenience store in the meantime.
A spokesperson for Tesco released this statement:
There was a tunnel dug under the ATM and the thieves effectively wanted to burgle the contents of the machine. We are helping police with their investigation going forward.
Despite the £50,000 I suspect they may have some difficulty in getting this amount of cash around without raising suspicion. It is unlikely they will be able to bank this as nowadays banks in the UK will ask how you have come by such a large amount of money, particularly cash, and with this now out on the internet, it’ll be hard to pass this straight off in transactions.
This makes it likely they will have to sit on the cash for a fair amount of time, and spend it in small amounts. Who know, maybe they’ll just use it for buying their meals at this store when it reopens…
