A 17-year-old teenage boy scout named Ruddy Hummel recently began an unique adventure. Although he has a loving family and a house, Ruddy decided to sleep outdoors and he has been doing that for the past seven months. Ruddy’s ultimate goal is to endure a whole year by sleeping outside regardless of the harsh weather conditions.
The crafty boy scout from Hermantown, Minnesota says he absolutely loves camping and spending as much time as possible outdoors. Not only does Ruddy aim to test the limits of his abilities but the young man also wants to raise awareness about the homeless. During his project he contacted a few local and national organizations and will attempt to raise money and donate the proceedings.
The teen states that during the summer and autumn periods sleeping outdoors was just a piece of cake. But when winter, the Polar Vortex and the record breaking below zero temperatures came it was a whole new challenge. The crafty teenager designed his own shelter in his backyard. At first Ruddy slept on a tree house which his father helped him build. But when the snow fell he designed his own little dwelling. It’s called a quinsy which is basically a snow shelter made entirely out of snow. He covers himself with a lots of blankets and several sleeping bags inside which he sometimes puts bottles with hot water. So when the temperatures drop as low as minus 23 degrees Fahrenheit he is protected.
Although his parents are worried about Rudy, they completely support him in every bizarre idea he has. Hopefully, he will successfully complete his project in the end of June this year.
