Recently, there has been a new scientific breakthrough in the field of neurology and cognition. Researchers based at the Oxford University believe they have discovered a special “switch” inside our brains which makes us want to fall asleep. The discovery could potentially help the scientific community develop a super effective cure for many dreadful sleep impairing disorders such as insomnia.
The special “switch” is being referred to as “homeostat”. It is ultimately the mechanism inside our brain that works by regulating the neuron cells and tells us when we were awake for too long. The homeostat also signals the whole body that it’s tired and is time to go to bed. The researchers conducted experiments with fruit flies. They were able to create insomniacs out of the insects by impairing or removing this specific region in their brains – the homeostat. When they’ve witnessed the results they knew that there is a similar region in the human brain as well.
The scientists are currently investigating in what ways they could trigger the “sleep switch” in the human brain and potentially eradicate insomnia forever.
