19-year-old Delfina Codeno from the town of Vernon in the Dominican Republic is suffering from a terrible and extremely rare disorder. She is bleeding profusely through her sweat and tears. Occasionally, blood also seeps through her nostrils, belly button and even fingernails.
In the beginning doctors were skeptical and did not believe Delfina at all. It wasn’t until she began bleeding during an examination that they were convinced of the severity of her condition. The doctors were absolutely perplexed and could not determine the cause of her rare condition.
At one point Delfina began bleeding so profusely that she almost bled to death, the bleeding lasting for up to 15 days. She was in an extremely critical condition and was only saved by blood transfusions. Delfina’s condition also influenced her life in a dramatic way. She was feeling depressed, lonely and was in a complete shock for long periods of time.
Eventually, after hundreds of tests the doctors were able to diagnose Delfina with Hematidrosis which is an extremely rare condition. This means that the 19-year-old Delfina produces twenty times the regular levels of the hormone adrenaline that circulates in a person’s bloodstream. It makes her so anxious that her blood pressure rises to the point when her blood begins to seep into her sweat glands thus Delfina begins to bleed from everywhere.
She is currently being treated with the proper medication in order to have control over the bleeding.
