Ryan Jones was a medical student in the University of Virginia. He was taking an exam where he had to examine pretend patients who were in fact paid actors. Even though Jones was aware that the people weren’t actual patients he noticed something disturbing while examining Jim Malloy. The latter was an actor given the task to portray the symptoms of an abdominal aortic aneurism. The condition is very serious and life-threatening but it can remain unnoticed for a long time until it manifests itself suddenly one day when it might be too late.
Mr. Malloy was pretending to have the symptoms but during the examination Ryan Jones discovered that the pretend patient really had them. Assuming that the school might have placed an actual patient just to test him, Jones didn’t hesitate to announce what he had found. Shocked, Mr. Malloy told him that he didn’t know he had any real symptoms but he was going to have another medical examination immediately.
After confirming his condition Malloy went through surgery to remove the aneurism and managed to make a full recovery. However, if it hadn’t been for Ryan Jones’ good diagnostic skills, he might not have been that lucky.
