Check out this guy – he doesn’t speak any French, but that didn’t stop him from winning the French-language Scrabble championship!
Nigel Richards managed to climb his way to the finals of the French Scrabble World Championships and to even beat his final opponent on his way to winning the grand title.
Richards was born in Christchurch, New Zealand, and he’s an avid scrabble player. He has won the US National Scrabble competitions 5 times and he’s even won the World Championship a total of 3 times. However, he doesn’t speak French – that’s why his win at the French-language competition was so striking. As it turns out, the man started training for the championship with a French dictionary 8 weeks before the actual game. He started taking out words from the dictionary and sticking them into his brain. He doesn’t speak French, but he surely knows how to write it. What’s even more striking is the fact that he managed to beat his French-speaking opponent after he had been studying the language for 8 weeks only!
Liz Fagerlund, the woman known as the best Scrabble player on the planet, addressed Richards’ incredible skills. She stated that his win, which took place in Belgium, was “quite impressive” and that the fact that Mr. Richards wouldn’t be able to carry out any type of conversation in French didn’t stop him from claiming the glorious victory thanks to his competitive flair. Fagerlund herself is a good friend of the contestant and used to be the president of the New Zealand Scrabble Association.
According to official reports, the guy’s win was so unbelievable that one of his opponents, who lost the game, joked about how Richards is an “extra-terrestrial” creature because of his stunning skillset.
