We have all seen movies and heard stories about exactly how dangerous and deadly the Piranha fish is. They are considered by the federal government as an extremely aggressive and territorial fish that thrives by feeding larger prey like amphibians, reptiles and even mammals. This is why piranhas are also illegal in 25 states in America and anyone who attempts to breed them or smuggle them will receive a huge fine or even a prison sentence.
This is exactly what happened recently to a company owner named Joel Rakower who pleaded guilty in front of a federal court in Brooklyn. Recently, he and his company allegedly smuggled almost 40,000 piranhas in NYC. Rakower told the supplying company from Honk Kong to wrongly label the crates of fish ‘silver tetras’ and not deadly piranhas. This way in 2011 and 2012 he was able to smuggle exactly 39,548 piranhas worth of $37,376.
The piranha smuggle Joel Rakower is scheduled to be sentenced on April 24.
