Derek Amato was having a great time at a pool party when he suffered an accident. When trying to catch a football thrown at him Amato jumped into the pool but accidently hit his head badly on the shallow end. The man had a concussion and was immediately taken to hospital to get the brain injury treated. In the next few days after the accident Amato would describe his mind as “racing” which was most probably due to the rewiring of neurons in his brain.
Once he got better Amato paid a visit to a friend of his who had a piano at his house. Never before having played in his life, Amato was suddenly drawn to the piano and shockingly realized that he was now able to perform extraordinary well. It was all due to the impact the incident had had on his brain.
Scientists describe Amato’s condition as musical savant syndrome. People suffering from it suddenly discover they have prodigious abilities, most likely after suffering some kind of brain injury. The condition in extremely rare and only few people apart from Amato have been documented to have it.
