Melvin Johnson, a man in his 50s, was sentenced to 203 years in prison. The number is shocking, to say the least. What did Johnson do to live the rest of his life behind bars? He robbed a gas station, taking only $100.
According to the judge, Johnson also used a handgun, with which he threatened to kill the cashier woman in the gas station. He fled after a customer entered the station, but got arrested later. However, this isn’t his first arrest. According to his record files, he had been arrested at least one time each year ever since 1978, excluding the years he was serving his time in jail. Previously he had been sentenced to 15 years of hard labor. In 2011 the judge sentenced him to 198 years in prison for the robbery and to additional 5 years for using the handgun.
According to the judge, this is the only way to teach the criminal a lesson. He believes that if he gains his freedom again, there will be more robberies, more crimes and probably even a murder.
