The point of having a Facebook profile is to always stay connected with your friends and relatives. Unfortunately this is what got a high school teacher booted from her job. Recently, a teacher named Carol Thebarge who has worked for over 30 years in New Hampshire’s Clearmont school system lost her job for publicly refusing to “unfriend” her students on Facebook.
When Ms. Thebarge created her Facebook profile more than 5 years ago she connected to a great number of her students throughout this period. She believed the social network gave her a great opportunity to be more connected to her students. By befriending the students she was responsible for on Facebook she could better understand them and reach out when necessary. Unfortunately, such online activity did not comply with the school’s online media policies. Ms. Thebarge was given an ultimatum and when she refused to comply she was fired. Although she will not attempt to overturn the dismissal Ms. Thebarge hopes the school revises its policies in the future.
