There is an amazing annual event held each September in the Sanders Theatre at Harvard. It’s similar to the Nobel Prize awards ceremonies, but with a huge twist. It’s called the Ig Nobel Prizes. Awards are granted to real, well distinguished scientists for conducting the most absurd and bizarre experiments. They usually conduct their research with humoristic purposes to make people laugh, but also think how the bizarre scientific achievements could actually solve real problems.
One amazing “scientist” who won the Ig Nobel Peace Award for 2013 was the Mayor of the city of Vilnius in Lithuania, Arturas Zuokas. He was honored with the award for his astonishing achievement for discovering a new breakthrough way for stopping drivers park illegally their vehicles. The Mayor noticed that hundreds, even thousands of vehicles blocked the bicycle lanes throughout the city, so he decided to take action. He demonstrated easily how this problem could be solved by running over a luxurious illegally parked car with an armored tank just for the sake of making his point.
His video uploaded on YouTube currently has over 4 million views and Zuokas even attended the ceremony where he was given his Peace award.
